In this issue of Nominet News, we discuss the
outcomes of our Extraordinary General Meeting on 24 February, and the impacts that a successful result and the recent passing of the Digital Economy Act are likely to have on Nominet and the domain name industry. On a personal note I would like to thank members for voting; the number taking part was double our usual turnout. I am delighted that so many of you chose to participate.
On the systems front we have introduced a new service for registrars to allow information about domain name resellers to be included in our WHOIS and any communication Nominet has with registrants. This should make communication between registrars, resellers, Nominet and registrants much clearer, and you can find out
how to use the service here.
We also outline
the steps Nominet has been taking recently to secure .uk using DNSSEC and why this is such a significant milestone.
The security of the DNS was a major talking point at the
ICANN meeting in Nairobi in March, and you can find out why and what has happened subsequently here.
We are currently in the second month of a three month consultation on the release of
reserved short domain names. We have currently received 83 responses from interested parties, but we would encourage all .uk stakeholders to get in touch with their views.
Since the previous edition of this newsletter, my colleague Bob Gilbert has resigned as Nominet Chairman following our successful EGM result. I would like to thank him for all his hard work and commitment over the past five years. Gordon Dick has taken over as Interim Chairman and we are currently recruiting for a new Chairman.
Thanks to those of you who gave us positive feedback on our first edition of this newsletter, and I hope that more of you will subscribe and encourage colleagues within the industry to do so.
I hope you find this edition interesting and look forward to bringing you more news from the .uk domain name industry next time.
Thank you
Lesley Cowley
Chief Executive, Nominet UK
